Deciphering 1939 register

Postby Jethro Tull » Fri Jun 01, 2018 8:57 pm

Hello all.

I'm researching a chap who I have now found on the 1939 register. I'm having trouble understanding what his job was. I've attached the entry and the transcription has been interpreted as "C S W S Ref D s D g Whitehall". The address is in Winchester. His career from 1909 until 1934 was a telegraphist in the Royal Navy. Can anyone give me an idea what his job may have been or work out the actual entry as something else.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

I'll try that again! I hadn't realised it did not upload properly.

Cheers

D S D seems to be some department in the Admiralty (Whitehall!) Standing for what?

Thanks Ian, that would make sense with his previous career as a C.P.O Telegraphist. The link to Whitehall and the Admiralty fits too. Any suggestions on the other abbreviations?

Cheers

Dan.

I hadn't seen your other reply! I'll focus my searching on the D s D g. I was thinking along the lines of "Department of ......" but can't find anything yet to fit.

Thanks for that Ian. Wonderful stuff. I had found a reference to GCHQ/DSD in the 60's and this linked to the "Defense Signals Directorate" but no other info. I am now thinking the "g" is a 9 and the address of 9 Whitehall.

Hi
I think you are right about the 9 (rather than g)
