Florence Emma Budge

Postby paulbudge » Sat Sep 23, 2017 9:07 pm

Can anyone help please? I cannot find a death record for Florence Emma Budge.

She was born in Torpoint (Antony) in Cornwall in 1868 and appears in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses. I can't find her in 1901 but in the 1911 census she is a midwife with C.M.B. certification working in Yalding, Kent. The Midwives' Roll shows her as working from 1901 (very early) and she has entries for 1905 in Thetford, 1910 and 1915 in Yalding and then 1920 in Ruan Minor on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall. My father told me that she was around in Plymouth in about 1925. In 1920 she would have been 52 years old and unmarried. I believe that she never married.

There is no death record in the GRO for a person her her name and the correct age and she is not in the 1939 register. Her younger brother by 1 year, Arthur Edwin Budge, died in 1933.

If you have ANY idea I would be VERY grateful.

Name: Florence E Budge
Death Age: 84
Birth Date: abt 1858
Registration Date: Dec 1942
Registration district: Bodmin
Inferred County: Cornwall
Volume: 5c
Page: 71

Have you checked this out? Appreciate that the birth year is out by 10 but in the absence of the obvious you will need to check any possibility.

Florence Elizabeth is definitely not your Florence Emma as she was born in 1858 in the Liskeard registration district.

I can't find Florence on emigration records, and there doesn't seem to be a death for her after 1920, her last appearance on the Midwives' Roll. You believe she didn't marry, but in that case, you'd think she'd keep up her Midwifery status so she could support herself. A change of surname might explain why she isn't on the Roll as Budge after 1920. Have you ruled out the marriages for a Florence Budge in 1920, Plympton, to Robert SG Worth, in 1920, Plympton, to Robert Fowler, or in 1922, Plymouth, to Henry Walter Colling? Although at that time it was common for women not to practice after marriage, maybe you could try those surnames on the Midwives' Roll, just in case?

On the BNA website, Florence (age 30 of Winkfield) is mentioned in an article dated 5 November 1898. She is "described as nurse". Both the Faringdon Advertiser and the Berkshire Chronicle share the same article ("Alleged Attempted Suicide By A Nurse")

It appears Florence was "charged with having unlawfully taken a certain quantity of destructive fluid called benzine, with intent thereby to kill herself". The article goes on to mention a Mark Pizzey, a married sporting correspondent.
