My Grandfather served in the RFC. Any ideas where I can find details of his service?

Thanks

Start by reading the TNA Research Guides on http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/airman-royal-flying-corps/ and http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/officer-royal-flying-corps/

Note that the RFC was officially part of the Army until 1 April 1918, after which it became part of the newly created RAF. Anyone whose career didn't go past 1 April 1918 must be researched as part of the Army with all the issues that brings about loss of records in the fire in WW2. RAF records have a much better survival rate.

The most sensible thing to do - unless you know differently - is to work on the basis that he served after the formation of the RAF and look for his details in that lot first.

I obtained my grandfather's RFC/RAF service record from the National Archives. It contains lots of useful information about his time in France and England from when he enlisted in 1916 until his discharge. However, I obtained another record on a relative who served his time at an air base in southern England. There was very little detail on it that wasn't already known. So it is a bit of pot luck as to what you find.
