Which School is it? - part of early Scouting history

Postby redblue » Wed Apr 15, 2009 9:16 am

I have a photo of my great-grandfather as part of an early Scout group. The photo is taken in front of a school building - I would love to find out which school it is. I will try to scan it in & post it here. Do people still look at these posts? Any idea how else I could find out which school it is?

My great-grandfather was born in Maryport, Cumberland in 1895 & was still there in 1901. I do not know where he went to school, but probably in Cumbria somewhere. Scouting started in 1908 when he would have been 13. He later became a doctor, so he was probably at school till age 16/17 (1912).

I look at these posts several times a day, every day. Not just week days when I should be working....I am retired. Too many sites 'die' over the weekend when posters are not at work!
Interested in the surname SNELL circa 1910, Middlesex. and Claudia Vail nee Snell, living and married in Canada from about 1912/16.

I check out the posts several times a day. At work I am blocked from the site, but check it out when I get home. The only time I miss is if I am away and have no internet access!

I think I have found it! After much googling I was directed to a wikipedia list of schools in Cumbria - one school matched the opening dates & school crest in the photo - then the building was pictured on the school website. It seems to be at Nelson Thomlison School, Wigton, Cumbria, formally called Floshfield House. I hope I wasn't mistaken.

I 'work' when I am at 'work' so am only able to look at this site when at home (mainly weekends or the odd evening) and have internet access. The only other time I don't check the site is if I'm away for some reason or other.

Almost certainly Nelson Thomlinson although then the Nelson Boys School, built in 1896. Probably 1st or 2nd Wigton Scouts as 3rd were Sea Scouts from 1960's front of building hasn't changed!
