date of photograph Alice Robertshaw

Postby nenchad04 » Fri May 22, 2015 6:32 pm

Hi, Can anyone give a clue to the year this photo may have been taken. It is of Alice Robertshaw nee Stott b1876 and possibly her children born 1907 and 1908. We are trying to make certain who the others are and I feel they must be her children as I can't see going to the trouble and expense of sitting for one with someone else's children. I think if the pic was dated that might help us be more certain.
thanks in advance

If the children were born in 1907 and 1908 the photo would have to have been taken at least after the end of the 1WW or around the early 1920s based on how old they look. The clothes they are all wearing do not fit with this time. They would be far more 'modern'. If the photo was taken at the end of the 1800s, Alice would have been in her 20s so it is unlikely that the children were hers. Could the girls be her young siblings, if she had any? The other possibility is that they were dressed in costume for some reason but that doesn't feel right. Of course, the photo could be of someone else? Sorry, can't be more helpful.

Fashion for ladies in England showed the development of 'Leg of Mutton' sleeves around 1889. These are the type worn by the lady in your photograph. Over the next decade these became much larger in size. The ones in your photograph are rather small so would suggest nearer 1890's than 1900's although ladies often kept 'best' dresses for some years especially if they wee not particularly wealthy.
I would say the photograph is most likely pre WWI.

Edward Clapham, b abt 1864 in Burnley, appears as a photographer in the 1911, 1901, and 1891 censuses. In the earlier two he is living in Ferny Lee Cottages or Ferny Lee Rd though in the 1891 he's in his father's household. You could try investigating Directories to see when his business opened at that address.

My gut feeling is also 1890s for the photo.

Oh - I'm sure there's a family resemblance with the nose - but I believe that those cannot be children born in the 1900s.

I had another look at the photograph and taking into consideration what others have suggested, I just wondered if Alice was not the adult but one of the girls. If she had been born in 1876 this might possibly make sense. The adult could then possibly be Alice's mother as there is a resemblance. Just a thought.

thank you everyone. I'm doing it for a friend, and on the reverse of the picture is written alice, children unknown and he got the picture from his grandmother. I will take on board the help you have all given and try and go through it systematically.

thanks again
