Cause of death entry struck out

Postby SimonDaw » Fri Oct 19, 2007 4:03 am

A death certificate that I recently obtained had the cause of death entered as "Bronchitis Certified" and the whole of the cause of death box is struck through with a diagonal line. Does anybody know the meaning of this?

Pure speculation. Could it be to do with recording statistics on causes of death? A line through indicates it had been recorded? Perhaps only occurred locally as I have not seen this on other death certificates.

Having said that, a random search on Google images shows a similar line appearing on other death certificates but at the end.

This is a GRO copy of the certificate, not a local one, so I wouldn't have thought it to have anything to do with statistics. The diagonal line at the end of certificates is usually to show that no further information was added to the entry.

I have never seen an entry crossed out like this one, hence the question.

Two thoughts: the line was put there in error instead of the end (unlikely) or a doubt was raised later about the actual cause of death. Perhaps a post mortem was decided upon or foul play. Have you checked to see if a later certificate was issued? Perhaps local newspapers have a mention of the death. My gut feeling is that this is so unusual that it must have some significance.

He died in a Union Workhouse, so perhaps there was some irregularity that caused the entry to be struck out. I've not managed to find a later certificate.

A bit of a mystery really!
