Working life

I have discovered that my 3 x great grandfather, Isaac Shipman, who lived in Grays Inn Lane, London in 1841, was a 'fringe maker', at least I think that is what is written on the census return. Has anyone found this before and would he have been making trimmings for the upholstery trade? Any suggestions would be very welcome.
