Rupert Penry-Jones - India records

Postby Millst » Fri Oct 11, 2013 1:35 pm

I was recently watching the Rupert Penry-Jones programme (Series ??) and enjoyed it very much. However, it was not always clear where the documents came from that he was given on his trip to India and how they managed to find his ancestor's letters.

Is there a public record office in India or were they mainly from local record offices or churches, or the India Office or FIBIS in London.

I can't remember the source of letters on this episode and don't have access to a recording as I am in Sydney. However, the principal source of records relating to India is the India Office Records at The British Library, and now part of (I think) the Asia Pacific & Africa Collection (the BL keeps re-naming so I may not be right up to date on this). Families in British India Society http://www.fibis.org is one of the best on-line sources for British India.
