Who was Mary Margaret Cameron DUNCAN?

Postby Rob » Wed Oct 10, 2012 1:04 pm

I wonder if anyone can help here. I'm trying to find about a Mary Margaret Cameron DUNCAN, who married George Witheat ROBERTS at Hendon, in 1916. FreeBMD has the marriage (she is Mary M.C. DUNCAN) but I have her full middle names from the probate calendar when George died in 1919 and when they were living at Highdene, Golders Green. But after this the trail goes cold. I have been unable to find a likely birth for her and nor can I find her on any census. A Mary M.C. ROBERTS married in London in 1921 to a Samuel COHEN - this might be her, and I've tracked this lady through the Electoral Register to her death in 1952 (Samuel died soon after they married, in 1923), and her name is sometimes given as Margaret Mary Carroll COHEN. So, her forenames are transposed (although not on the marriage record) and a different middle name. So I'm not convinced it's the same person! Without ordering up the certs, does anyone have any clues how I might find out? Her name suggests she may have been Scottish. Another theory is that she was American and returned to the US after George's death. If anyone wants to help, I've put what I know on a webpage at http://tinyurl.com/8frpmjy. Thanks!

Hi,

I haven't managed to find anything useful. It seems from your webpage that you don't have the marriage certificate for Mary and George and I think you really need to get it to find out a bit more.
It may give you Mary's age , it will say if she was a widow when she married and it should give you her father's name , all of which might help you in tracing her.

Incidentally this board is really for chat rather than specific queries - you might get more responses if you post again on Help with Research.

Good luck

She definitely was Scottish with a middle name of Cameron and Duncan (a Scottish King) and coming from Aberdeen as stated on your link. I am unclear what you are looking for as you seem to have most of the information on her birth and the census already.

Thanks. Since I put the initial post on the forum, I found out some more about her and was able to make a more definite connection with George Witheat Roberts. It turned out that her maiden name was given as Duncan when she married him, but her birth surname was also Roberts. A coincidence which took me a while to work out! Her mother married a George Roberts and after he died a George Duncan. Mary's sister Isabella kept the name Roberts but Mary it seems took her step-father's surname of Duncan.
