Prison Records

Postby eurogordi » Sun Apr 20, 2008 9:30 pm

It appears that my wife's 3x great grandfather, James Brown, was imprisoned at Chesterton County Gaol & House of Correction, Chesterton, Cambridgeshire at the time of 1841.

His wife, Sarah Brown (nee Plumb) was certainly at home on her own at the family home in Burrough Green, looking after the children. There is also a "child gap" at the time her husband was presumably absent, while the couple were otherwise having children every two years.

However, having contacted the Cambridgeshire Record Office they have informed me that no records survive for Chesterton County Gaol & House of Correction and cannot locate information for James Brown elsewhere.

Does anyone know of any other source that I could possibly use? I would like to have some certainty that the missing husband is prisoner James Brown, and it would also be interesting to find out what his crime was.

All suggestions welcome as always.

Dear Gordon,
I would try local newspapers, if possible, to see if anything has been reported upon.
Also useful is the A2A website [link=http://www.a2a.org.uk]www.a2a.org.uk[/link] as this lists some details such as Quarter Session Papers, and if you search for the name James Brown, and sort under location of Archives- if you look under Cambridge, you may come up with your one, or if not, the Cambridgeshire County Record Office may be able to help you find which court records would be the best ones to search for.
Also, if the family were trying to survive on no income whilst James was incarcerated, could they have relied on parish relief and would it be worth checking those records?
