Free Times archives - last day tomorrow!

I have been using the great free resource of the archives on The Times on line. Tomorrow is the last day of free access to this. If you haven't looked at it yet I recommend it. I found my great grandmother's death announcement, various wedding, funerals, births etc. Also the full details of the sinking of HMS Eurydice in which an ancestor drowned.

It is going to be very expensive to use after tomorrow. Nearly ...

Charles Vallance

I have been unsuccessful in tracking down the birth cert. of a Charles Vallance born abt 1844 in Middlesex(Hoxton I think) have info on him from 1867 up to his death, but no luck with finding his parents etc. Does not appear on any of the census until 1881. On his marraige cert. to a Frances Dobbs, states his father as Charles Vallance - both were instrument makers/muscians. Any suggestions as to where to look ...

Records for Future Genealogists

I've posted this thread having been prompted by responding to another one elsewhere on these boards about little being known about relatives pasts. I'll bet most people, like me are desperately trying to piece together their ancestry and find out about their ancestors lives. The thing I find most frustrating and sad in some ways is that I know the names, addresses, occupations etc. of ancestors from census entries, parish records etc. but I know ...

Mixed bag of records

I live in East Anglia and most of my ancestors are from Northumberland and Durham - with a sprinkling in Lancashire and some in the USA. One of my favourite websites is:

http://search.labs.familysearch.org

Its a pilot site and part of the LDS Family Search organisation

It provides searchable records such as the 1900 US Census & New York Passenger Arrivals 1892 -1924 plus many others from around the world.

There are also a wide range ...

Using Google Earth to map your Ancestors

If you are interested in using Google Earth to visualise your family tree then can I suggest http://www.familytreeassistant.com as a useful website?

I've put together a file for my Skinner tree which shows the kind of thing you can produce. If you have a copy of Google Earth you can view it here -

http://www.familytreeassistant.com/SkinnerTree20080625.kmz

Don't forget to expand the time span slider in the top right corner of the Google ...

Times archive

For an unspecified period of time, The Times archive 1785-1985 is available for free. This will be welcome news for those unable to gain access to the archive through Gale International. The archive can be searched on http://archive.timesonline.co.uk/tol/archive/. Registration is required to view the extracts. It is not known how long it will remain free, so grab it while you can.
