1939 Register accuracy

Whilst I was at The National Archives (TNA) this week I looked for the entry for one of my ancestors, Sarah Walton Benzies, who lived for many years in Twickenham. Not only could I not find her but according to the index there was only one person in England and Wales with the surname Benzies (a Scottish surname) but I knew there was a group of them in the Northumberland area. After searching for about ...

Accuracy of records

Whilst searching The National Archives' Discovery catalogue I came across references to two stolen birth and death local registers. The first (RG 48/511) from a robbery on 9/10 January 1924 in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, South Wales, where two burglars had stolen an iron box which had the registers for parts of 1922-1923 and which were not found when the iron box was found. The local registrar re-recorded the entries in a new register provided by the ...

Roots Tech in London

I do think that charging £99 for a three-day pass is way over the top. As someone who lives just outside London that is a lot, let along for people a distance from London. Are we being taken for granted, it has to offer more than just a few celebrities. I for one will not be going.

Probate records price cut

Hello everyone,

As you might have seen, the government has just cut the price of probate records from £10 to £1.50 (http://www.whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine. ... -12-months). I'm writing an article about this for the magazine and I'd be really grateful for your help! Have you taken advantage of the price cuts to order any probate records, or are you going to? Have you got any brick walls they can help with? ...

Ordering wills from the Probate Office

I have tried to order a will (Boleslaw Markowski) from 1990 but the system won't allow me to put the last folio letter in the request. Does anyone have experience of this and how to get it to work?.
Thanks.

A really big 'thank-you' to contributors on this forum!

I simply must post a big 'thank-you' to various contributors to this forum.

Way back in 2014 I posted a long story about part of my family history that I was trying to research - the thread is here: http://www.whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine.com/forum/topic10134.html. The story of my great-grandfather's other relationship is also highly relevant: http://www.whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine.com/forum/topic12114.html ianbee was especially helpful in helping me with breaking through the difficult web of false names, poorly transcribed information and more.

Last year, ...

Royal Marines records

Recently The National Archives (TNA) announced that volunteers and TNA had indexed the attestation and discharge records in Admiralty series of papers ADM 157.

https://blog.nationalarchives.gov.uk/by ... e-records/

Whilst this was a worthwhile project, it is riddled with many errors on the places of birth and in my view the cataloguing should be taken with a large pinch of salt. Examples are men said to have been born in "Monmouthshire, ...
