The Great Genealogical DNA Scam!

Hopefully I have caught your attention with my subject heading and I certainly don't want to underestimate the power of DNA testing, but being somewhat cynical I am starting to wonder if this has become something of a money-making scam by the various companies offering an ancestral DNA service.

It is almost 12 months ago that I finally paid to have my DNA checked, choosing Ancestry above the other companies available. When I received my ...

Findmypast down..?

Is anyone else having trouble getting on to Findmypast?
Since yesterday morning I've just been getting the message "Sorry, we had trouble getting those results. Bear with us and try again later, while we work on this issue."

DNA matching on

Found a gotcha on this site that users need to be aware of:-

Kit Numbers are Case Sensitive!

I entered my Kit as a932104 and top of the results list was a near 100% match to me. It didn't make sense, until I spotted the kit number being compared (shown at top of results table) was NOT a932104, but the kit number of the person with whom I had the 100% match (make sense ...

Double Cousins

Hello, I was wondering what the technical term is for people who are first cousins twice over.
On my mother’s side, she had 3 aunts who married a set of 3 brothers (Murphy girls and Lawler boys). On my father’s side, he had 2 great-uncles who married a pair of sisters (Canham boys and Garland girls). All 5 marriages produced children. I have referred to the children as ‘double cousins’, but there is probably a ...

Family Tree Maker tech help

I've got great grandparents who are first cousins (mothers are sisters) so they share common grandparents, great grandparents etc. This means that my FTM data is duplicated - I've looked for ways of combining the parents but nothing works - any ideas or experience please?

DNA tests - useful or irrelevant?

In a moment of festivity I bought a couple of these tests at Christmas as got the results back recently. Why did I do it? Purely because I wanted to say I had 'viking' ancestry. My husband claims clear Norman descent and I wanted to win in the argument 'My family has been here longer than yours'. The results were interesting. I am 100% British with regional connections from Devon, across the centre and up ...

Genealogist and or achivist as a career

Can someone point me in the right direction of a change in career to a genealogist and then an archivist. Although technically we are genealogists, I would like maybe to become a researcher, perhaps private at first. What specific qualifications would I need?

Also what about an archivist. Again, what qualifications would I need? When, researching this before it seems to be quite an American stance. I'm in the UK.

Although saying that to ...

Thoughts wanted on dates of death...

I have two relatives who died when their submarines were sunk during the Great War and I would like opinions on what others would put as their dates of death.
Albert Samuel Lister was in the D3 when it was sunk in error by a French airship in the English Channel on 12 March 1918, but his service doc states he was ‘Discharged Dead’ on 15 March, which is the date CWGC gives as his ...
