I am hoping someone can help me establish the parents of a Mary Barker, nee Hancock, who, according to the family bible, was born in Cutthorpe, Chesterfield on 14/2/1869 & died on 31/7/1916. Her birth does not appear to be registered, the birth of a Mary Hancock in Bakewell in 1869 being to a Joseph Hancock. ...

John GOLLOP

John GOLLOP married Elizabeth Jane EVELEIGH on 23 May 1858 at Lambeth. He was a bachelor and a coach trimmer. He named his father as John GOLLOP, a plasterer. in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses, he gives his birthplace as Honiton, Devon. His age in these three censuses is consistent and suggests a birth in 1837.

Gollop seems to be a fairly popular`name in Devon. There is a baptism of a John Gollop in ...

1939 NS - how important were address details?

I'm researching birth mother details for an adopted relative, and on different government documents, the birth mother gives different address (and occupation) details.

On her child's adoption records in 1937/38, she says she has been working for a local family from the age of 12 (presumably as a mother's helper). She continued working for ...

How wealthy were farmers

I have some welsh ancestors who were farmers. It appears that their 103 acres was rented from a landowner.

Was this a usual situation? Is this a small plot in farming size for the mid 1800's? Was it hard to make a living from farming?

I'm a bit confused as my direct descendant left home and did other jobs (labourer and railway policeman), which I assume means there was not enough farm work to sustain ...
