Can Anyone Read This Occupation..?

This is the 1861 census image of the family and employees of John Stewart, Tarbert, Gigha, Argyllshire: Gigha is an island off the west coast of Kintyre in Scotland.
He is married to Susannah (nee Allpress - my 1st cousin 4 times removed), born Fen Drayton, Cambs.

The occupation I can't work out is that of 14-year-old Donald Graham. Fmp has transcribed it as 'Herd', but I'm sure the last three letters are 'ird'.

William Greenhill & Samuel Crawley - Hemel Hempstead

While researching my ancestor Ezekiel Blake from Hemel Hempstead I can across two bail bonds he signed for William Greehill a cooper and Samuel Crawley a draper from Hemel Hempstead in 1829. The bonds are for large amounts for the time (£100) but I cannot trace what specific offence they are for, the bonds simply say tresspass, or whether there was a trial. Does anyone have these men in their tree and know what it ...

£1.50 Wills

Has anyone else encountered a long wait for the reduced price wills? I ordered 12 on 23rd July, received 3 a few days later then nothing. It's very possible there's a backlog due to the reduced price but my expected delivery date was given as 7th August.

DNA in genealogy

I understand there was an article about this in a recent magazine, but unfortunately I failed to obtain a copy. Can anyone either summarise the article, or otherwise tell me how one might go about using DNA testing?

Pre-Census Documents

Hi All
I have just had a real shock in my family history research by finding that my 3 x Gt. Grandfather committed suicide by hanging himself. He died intestate and left a wife and 6 children.

What I would like to do is find out what happened to his wife and children but it happened in 1798, well before the census so how do I find out where his wife moved to, if she ...

HMS Discovery 1875

My Great Great Grand father James Phillips was the cook on the HMS Discovery 1875 Artic expedition under Captain Nares .

I've been trying to find photos of James Phillips, I've found photos which shows the expedition but not managed to narrow him down, as a cook I'm guessing I might be out of luck but if anyone does find any of him that would be great.
