7th Royal Norfolks

My grandfather was posted to the 7th Royal Norfolks and went to France on 13 Jan 1940. My grandfather fought in the rear guard action at St Valery on Caux when his battalion was attached to the 51st Highland Division. As is well documented the 51st Highland Division was left behind during operation Dynamo (Dunkirk) and surrendered en masse. Except my grandfather and a group of others in his battalion did not surrender and returned ...

I have had a few issues trying to find a marriage for one of my 5th great grandparents.

I know they they were William Kerslake and Martha, I have painstakingly searched, but I have been unable to find a marriage record.

John, 1782, Crediton, Devon.
George, 1785, Crediton, Devon and Elizabeth (my ...

Solving a family mystery

Hi there,

I'm trying to find out what happened to my great great grandmother Elizabeth Lloyd (nee Robinson) b. around 1868 to East Rainton - Durham. I last found her on the 1901 census living with her husband Robert Lloyd b.1866 to Pemberton - Lancashire and their 5 children in Shildon - Durham. I found that Robert immigrated to the USA with his brother William's family in 1902 (as per the story handed down in ...

What are these numbered tags? (Sunday School?)

Would anyone know what these are please?

They are amongst my great grandmother's Sunday School items, some of which are dated 1907 and 1908 - when she would have been 37/38 years of age.

They each measure 30mm x 6mm.
The outer covering is similar to a flexible perspex. Looking "edge on" there are four "leaves" - so the "perspex" is doubled and folded over....if that makes sense.
Each has a red number on one ...

I wonder if any of you could point me in the right direction for Coroner reports or newspaper articles relating to his ...

John Drake - a mystery

Hi all,

I've recently been incredibly stumped with one of my 4x great grandparents, John Drake and his wife, Harriet.
I can't seem to find a marriage for them anywhere, so I have no idea what Harriet's maiden name could be and for John, I know that he was born in Essex in about 1781 and that he might have had some military service which would explain why he was in his early/mid 30s when ...

Handwriting help

Please can someone help decipher some handwriting on a birth certificate please?

It's for the birth of Jane Stephenson, born 29th May 1850 (it looks like 1851 but is in fact 1850) in Market Weighton. I cannot make out the writing between the 2 horizontal lines, between the date and where it says Market Weighton?

I'm aware that multiple births can result in a time being added but there is no matching entry on the ...

Hi there,

I looked up my ancestor Alexander Riley born in 1853 St George's on London who married Elizabeth but every census record has him as a wine weaver. Would someone be able to look at the records and see if I have interpretated that correctly please? And f so what is a wine weaver?!
