Arthur Augustus Septimus Newton (1881-1953)

With such a unique name, you'd think he'd be an easy find, however, I am unable to locate him on the 1901 Census, which leads me to speculate that he may have served in the Boer War.

According to a relative he enrolled with 'The Buffs', which I believe to be the East Kent Regiment in 1906. He also served in World War 1 with the Royal Army Medical Corps, unfortunately I can't find service ...

John Ridout

I'm trying to find the parents of John Ridout b1749 in Bourton, Dorset & baptised 1750 at Silton, Dorset; died 1829 in Purse Caundle - who I think are John & Mary Ridout probably also from Dorset.
I can't find their marriage or their baptisms either or deaths; for certain as there are many Ridouts in the area of Sherborne & Gillingham. Has anyone found details for Ridouts / Rideouts that might fit?

Death date of Ethel May Marshall.

My great-aunt Ethel May Marshall is a bit of a family mystery. Very little is known about her other than she didn't marry and died young before the 2nd World War started.
Born in April 1885 in Great Yarmouth and baptised there on 10th July 1885.
Her parents were John Marshall 1860-1931 and Agnes Mary Ann Marshall nee Hacon 1863-1900, both also from Great Yarmouth.
Ethel May appears in the 1911 census as a servant ...

Social commentary

In a recent tv series on slums, it was said that there was long recession from 1873 for 20 years, which had a large impact on families etc.

Does anyone know if there a social commentary in a short and accessible that can be laid out next to a family's tree that might help to explain moves, deaths etc. Something suitable for genealogy not historical research!

Such things as epidemics and historical events and the ...

Violet Richards, b.1896 - any thoughts?

I'm helping a friend with some of his family history and am struggling with researching someone born and bred in London. (I didn't realise that with the vast majority of my own ancestors coming from rural areas just how much harder a task this would be!) Here's what I have so far.

The 1939 Register shows Violet living with her husband James Dean at 1 Rheidol Terrace, Islington in London. Her date of birth is ...

Ann Smith - 1851 census (Yorkshire)

I am searching for Ann Smith in the 1851 census. She was born c1836 in Martin Common, Bawtry, Yorkshire/Nottinghamshire to parents Joshua and Ann Smith. Her father was a gamekeeper, according to the 1841 census.

In late 1852, Ann married William Williams (iron puddler) in the district of Rotherham. They lived in Kimberworth (1861), Brightside Bierlow (1871), and Attercliffe cum Darnall (1881 to 1901). Ann died in Sheffield in 1922.

There are two possibilities, that ...

Help please Nelly Knowlden nee Carpenter or Wood

I'm hoping someone might be able to help with tracing my great grandmother. I know the details from when she married my great grandfather in May 1899 to her death in 1921. Her marriage certificate shows her father as Edwin James Carpenter (deceased) who was a carpenter, and the witness were E M Pullen and H Cole. Her age was shown as 23, on the 1901 and 1911 census her year of birth is ...

Jacob Shiers born Austria c. 1837

I am seeking help with research into the birth and background of a Jacob Shiers who was, according to UK census information, born in Austria. It might be that he was actually born in the former region of Silesia which I believe overlapped parts of Austria/Germany/Poland. Jacob came to England in about the late 1850s and married Annie Finger (also from Austria) in a synagogue in Manchester in August of 1860. I have a copy ...

Brockley Terrace, Walworth 1891 ? Brockley Terrace, Walworth 1891 ?

Hello. I am having a struggle, as you do, with 'Jones' ancestors.
I have my Gt Grandparent's marriage cert; 16th Nov 1890, at All Saints Newington, when John James Jones marries Mary Ann Wallace, both 18 and both resident at 8 Brockley Terrace, Walworth. His father is John George Jones deceased, a labourer. Her father is John Wallace a Labourer.
I think my only hope is to find that his mother's with them in 1891 ...
