Finding a "War Baby" lost relative

In my family, there is a story that my Canadian Great-Grandfather fathered a daughter whilst in England during WWII.

My Great-Grandmother knew about this and told my great-aunt after my G-Grandfather passed.

What I know:
Great Grandfather's name: Stanley Alfred Maguire (1914-1970). He was a Sargent Major for the Canadian Forces. His family was English and he moved to Canada as a child.

The child in question was a daughter, likely born around 1946

I ...

Clifford's in Ireland

I am having some trouble tracking down Irish records on some of my ancestors.

In particular, I am searching for a Thomas Clifford (1797-1874) and his wife, Mary Clifford (1806-1872) (I think her maiden name Spencer but I haven't confirmed that). From what I know, they were either from or once lived in Kerry, Ireland.

I know that in 1833, they, with their children, Mary & Thomas, came to Canada.

I would love to be ...

I am still trying to find a grave or record of a William Mahons death.
Since 2013, when I last posted on this, I have found that his marriage to Mary Bennett (nee Eaves) is recorded as Mann. All future reference to him is as Mahon.
Also I have found he may have been a merchant seaman. Would anyone know if there are any ships crew records for the period 1780--1812 out of Swansea?

Thank ...

Too many Elliots

I have an ancestor John Elliot. He married Elizabeth Johnson in 1794 in Seaham, co.Durham, they had three children. Unfortunately she seems to have died in childbirth in 1800.

From entries for the birth of his children on FreeReg it says he was a joiner from Brampton, in Cumberland (one actually says 'native of the Parish of Abbey Cumberland', which I assume is the Lanercost region).

Only FamilySearch seems to have many entries for Cumberland ...

Unofficial London 'police', late 1700s

I'm trying to sort truth from fiction about a miniature my family has had since at least the 1880s and possibly much earlier, and which might be of my 3g grandfather, who according to the 1841 census was an auctioneer in London. The man in the portrait is wearing an unusual blue and white striped scarf, very long, with the stripes going lengthways, and I've been told that this denoted that he belonged to one ...

Tracing Beyond the Workhouse

I'm picking up some research on my great x2 and x3 grandfathers, after struggling to trace back beyond my x2 being born in the Durham Union Workhouse, of which there are no surviving Workhouse records.

My x2 grandfather William was born 3 Jan 1849 (thankfully a family bible gives me the exact date), but I have struggled to find census records on him for 1851 and 1861, until his marriage ...
