John Norton of Devon

My 2 x greatgrandfather John Norton was born circa 1806 – most of the censuses record him as being born in Chipplestone Devon. This place does not exist.
He married Susan Palk in 1833 in Brixham and died in the workhouse at Totnes in 1880. I have been trying to find any baptismal record for John Norton for many years but with no success.
According to a long lost family Bible my Norton line had ...

Insurance agent in 1911

My 2x great grandfathers occupation in 1911 was as an insurance agent. I've been trying to find out what that would have been like for him and the type of money he would have earn. The house he lived in had two bedrooms for two adults and 7 children aged 12 to 10 months. So I'm assuming they were ok but not well off.

does anyone have any information?

1916 Croydon Tramway Strike

Using the newspaper records held on FindMyPast, I have just discovered that my husband's great-grandfather took part in the 1916 Croydon Tramway Strike which lasted from April to August 1916. I believe the strike was called in order to obtain equal pay for women working on the tramway, particularly as the tramway was of significance for munitions workers.

My husband's great-grandfather was a conductor and was listed as summoned to appear in court for retaining ...

I have pulled up the maternity hospital glasgow employment records. He isn't listed.
I have tried looking through the valuation rolls of ...

More on the court case...

I posted recently asking for some help with a court case and thanks to some suggestions I have progressed (slightly) further with my research. I am now almost convinced that the case relates to the probate my Steven RAINGILL, who was brother to my ggg-grandmother. I have located a copy of Steven's will and transcribed it as best I could. In the will he left instructions for annuities for his wife and son and his ...
