Orphan Asylum

Regarding Hull Leamans & General Orphan Asylum - I am hopeful of obtaining a copy of the actual admittance form of one Edith Agnes Fisher. She is listed in 1891 as an inmate/scholar age 11 years and I would guess she was probably placed there in the early months of 1887 after the death of her mother. Can anyone set me in the right direction, I live in Australia and have tried searching the internet ...

False names

I have first hand experience of outright lies on civil registration. My grandmother's marriage certificate in 1897 bears a totally fictitious name for her father! An amusing but unsucessful attempt to give some respectability to her birth by recording the name "Marlow Prior" as her father simply because she was illegitimate and her mother (maiden name Prior) had very belatedly married a Mr Marlow!
It didnt take me long to unravel that deception.
John Howard ...

Wedding photo - May issue

I've just received the May issue and my heart missed a beat when I saw the wedding photo on p.25. The older woman on the extreme right is so like my grandmother, Louise Burger nee Liethen (1883-1967). She lived in the London Bridge area for most of her life.

Do you have any information about the photo? I'd guess it was taken 1950s or 1960s and I don't recognise anyone else.

From the names, you ...

BANNER DOWN LEFT OF MESSAGES IS IN THE WAY!

Coming onto the website today, hoping to view some of the interesting photographs left by members, I find that the new advertising banner "Save 40% off, click here to subscribe' is right down the middle right of the photograph, blocking proper viewing. There is no way the viewer can move it either. Also, whilst writing why is the clock on your webpage always an hour out? Hope you can resolve!

Talk by Sarah Williams (Editor)

I recently heard Sarah Williams talk at the Oxford Literary Festival along with David Hey, Emeritus Professor of local and family history, from Sheffield University and Susan Skedd from English Heritage's blue Plaque scheme. The session was chaired by Laurence Goldman the editor of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Although the session was only an hour long all the speakers were concise, amusing and very interesting.

If anyone gets the chance to hear any ...

Shakespeare Book presented to disabled soldiers

I was wondering if anyone else had a relative who received a copy of The Works of William Shakespeare.

These were apparently given to soldiers disabled in World War I under the Members of the Council of the League of the Empire.

I have the copy given to my Grandfather, William Frederick Wallis, 5th Royal Berkshire Regiment.

Having spoken to the staff at The Rifles Museum, the military expert at the checkpoint at WDYTYA exhibition ...

April issue

The April issue arrived promptly as usual and I'm sure it will be very interesting. Rather a surprise to find the Directory for Derbyshire , headed ' Archives and Resources in Kent ' - were the proof readers having an off day ( or even a day off ) ?

Annoying Ad

Don't know if anyone else has been affected by this, but there is one particular ad which appears either as a banner, or supposedly down the right hand side of a forum page. It is to "Trace your military ancestors". Problem is that its position seems unstable as frequently swings round to appear vertically on the left side of the forum panel, obscuring the top left part of a forum entry pane.
Can you look ...
