Unseen Footage for Graham Norton

Piecing his grandfather’s life together, Graham Norton visits a cinema in Carnew, Ireland where George Walker acted as a foreman during the cinema’s construction and later as a projectionist inside the cinema.

George was a controversial figure who brought cinema to Carnew – to the horror of local Catholics. In fact, the town priest even preached a sermon on the topic, convinced that the “devil was going to plant his cloven foot in his parish.”

Despite this seeming Catholic condemnation, Graham’s aunt May remembers Catholics creeping into the cinema, hoping that no one saw. Ironically, the cinema was later bought by the Catholic Church who used it as a community hall.
