Known for laying down the law in ITV’s Judge Rinder, Robert Rinder is the nation’s most beloved barrister.

For Who Do You Think You Are? he travels to Poland to trace his family history and discovers the tragic story of his grandfather's imprisonment in a concentration camp.

Here are five things you may not know about the star…

1. Famous friends

After studying together at Manchester University, Robert became close friends with actor Benedict Cumberbatch and was a best man at the Sherlock star’s wedding in 2015.

2. Strictly Come Dancing

Robert was propelled to national attention after a very impressive run in Strictly Come Dancing’s fourteenth season in 2016.

3. London’s own

Hailing from Southgate, Robert’s father was a black cab taxi driver and his mother worked her way to running her own publishing company.

4. A thirst for writing

While practicing to become a barrister, Robert wrote television scripts on the side and originally envisioned remaking the 1970s show Crown Court. What resulted was Judge Rinder, a British version of the American show Judge Judy. Additionally, Robert released his own book in 2015 entitled Rinder Rules.

5. Flirting with the stage

Growing up, Robert dipped his feet into the realm of acting at the National Youth Theatre. It was only at Manchester University where he found himself competing for the same role with Cumberbatch that he realised that perhaps acting wasn’t for him!
