The 13th series of Who Do You Think You Are? kicks off with an episode starring Danny Dyer – currently appearing as Mick Carter in EastEnders. But what else do we know about the Cockney actor?

Ever since his breakthrough role as the ne’er-do-well hooligan Tommy Johnson in The Football Factory, Danny Dyer has become as synonymous with London’s East End as Pearly Queens and Cockney rhyming slang.

It seems fitting, then, that the actor has gained renewed attention playing the loveable gaffer Mick Carter in EastEnders.

After a career in which Dyer established himself as the archetypal East End ‘ard man, starring in gritty action films such as The Business and Outlaw, many were surprised at Dyer’s new role as the Queen Vic’s landlord.

Since his debut in 2013, however, millions of viewers have warmed to the actor’s cheeky sense of humour. Now firmly on his way to becoming a national treasure, here’s five facts you may not have known about Walford’s favourite geezer...

1. From the East End to the West End

The celebrated playwright Harold Pinter was – somewhat surprisingly – a close friend of Danny Dyer, with the up-and-coming actor featuring in productions of the Nobel Laureate’s plays Celebration and The Homecoming.

2. The truth is out there

A firm believer in alien life, Dyer met his boyhood hero, Sir Patrick Moore, in 2010, which encouraged him to make a documentary on mysterious UFO sightings. Bringing his trademark cheeky wit to the quest, Dyer insists he saw something “out there”. Although, according to him, it may have been a kite.

3. Forever blowing bubbles

Famous for playing a diehard Chelsea supporter in The Football Factory, Dyer is actually a lifelong West Ham United fan. In 2007, he also became chairman of the little-known Greenwich Borough FC.

4. Are you muggin' me off?

Such is Danny Dyer’s cult status, he even has a novelty store dedicated to his talents. Here his loyal fanbase can buy T-shirts, mugs, and posters featuring the great man’s face and his many notable quotes. Cushty!

5. Acting chops

Danny Dyer’s debut came in the 1999 film Human Traffic, in which many critics praised his energetic performance. Away from the drama of Albert Square, Dyer has lent his distinctive Cockney accent to characters in the Grand Theft Auto series and even made a cameo in a fan-made spoof of The Football Factory.
